For a team that is 21-2 in games this season the Albemarle JV volleyball season started out a little rough. They lost their 1st scrimmage versus Western Albemarle, Massaponax gave them the 1st
loss of the season. After more hard work the team began to play well
together but were still not hitting on all cylinders. Fluvanna gave
them the 2
nd
loss this season.  After that match the team fought back hard and won
the Western Albemarle Tournament.  An away game at Riverbend (known for a
strong volleyball program in the Commonwealth district) started out badly but they
bounced back from an opening game loss and won the 2nd & third
games. The deciding game was close, but AHS prevailed 15-13.  The final
point Sammi Rocker ended the point with a hard driven  line shot kill.
This is the match where the team showed more heart than they believed
they had.In a tournament at Mills Godwin they played Atlee (the best
team they have faced all season).  AHS won in a nail biter in 3 games.
They went undefeated at the tournament and ended up winning it. On
October 20 the effort against Riverbend was a true team effort.  The
girls came together and fought hard to a 2 game victory. Head coach
Savannah Tinsley had these comments, “The girls on the court played so
hard and the girls on the sideline supported them every step of the way.
This group of girls are hard workers with determination and I believe
that’s why they have been so successful (21-2 counting the games played
in tournaments)  Our last game is Tuesday night at Colonial Forge.  I am
so proud of my girls for all their hard work, it sure paid off!”

The team consists of 6 sophomores: Abi Leonard (Libero, team veteran
and leader on the court, great passer and scrappy defense), Erin
McCullen (middle hitter, hits spots), Hannah Deal (outside hitter, all
around good player, power outside), Megan Farabaugh (setter, used to be
an outside hitter changed positions, adaptable player), Miah Perch
(middle hitter, jumps out of the gym, true athlete) and Sammi Rocker
(rightside hitter, lefty strong right side swing).  Freshman Keely Baker
(outside hitter, strong server and consistent hitter), Emma Bashline
(setter, serving specialist this year but in training for next year),
Initha Setiady (defensive specialist, strong serve receive), Katie Rice
(defensive specialist, strong right side defense), Katie Taylor
(defensive specialist, quick, strong defense), Megan Duggins (right side
hitter, lefty, athlete with amazing work ethic), Paige Hanssen (middle
hitter, strong serve and adaptable hitter) and Stacy Vitko (middle
hitter, quick blocker).   Managers are Allison Jaggers, Mattie Burris,
Quanae Boykin, and Cindy Yu.  The coaches are Savannah Tinsley, Ryan
Schuett, and Mike Prudencio.
