Wednesday
afternoon a big yellow school bus headed back to Gar-field High School
with a bunch of good tennis players who had just gotten decisively
dropped by a better team from Albemarle High School 5-0. The 20-0 Patriots, led
by five seniors, rolled over Gar-field in a surprisingly easy 5-0 win.
Will Murray and Ben Anderson led the way at the number 2 and 3 seeds
winning in straight sets. Coach Grobmyer commented, "Ben Anderson played
one of the finest matches of his career today. He had been struggling
lately but he found his confidence and came up big with a 6-1, 6-0
victory." Will  Murray had to play some of his best tennis against the
highly regarded Kishan Khana. After winning the first set easily, Murray
had to fight off a strong comeback by Khana to take the second set 6-4.
As an additional obstacle for Will,  Khana was traveling with his own
set of fans who were cheering his every positive move. "I expected Will
would have a tough match today but being such a fierce competitor, I
knew Khana would have a tough time beating him. Will came out so strong
and still had enough left at the end to close it out,” said Coach
Grobmyer. AHS will host the Riverbend Bears in the Northwest Region
Championship on Friday at 3:00. The matches are scheduled to be played
at The Boar’s Head Inn’s spectacular tennis facility.  If the Patriots
take care of business and defeat Riverbend, they will be rewarded with a
home match in the states first round on May 31. Albemarle has defeated
Riverbend three times this season, but there is never any benefit in
continually poking a Bear. Grobmyer had this to say about the Bears:
"They are playing great tennis now, having upset two number one seeds on
their way to the finals. We know what they're capable of and we'll have
to be playing at the top of our games to make sure we're not their
third straight upset victim. We will be ready and it will be fun." Only
single matches were necessary due to the runaway victory.
