Covenant has highflying season!
The
Covenant School’s varsity boys soccer team had a remarkable season in
2011. Covenant established their soccer program in 1994 and this team
went to a place none had gone before. Equally impressive was the fact
that no one outside the Covenant program believed it would happen this
year. TCS was knocked out in the state semifinals by eventual winner
Eastern Mennonite 2-1. TCS had 7 shots on goal in the last 13 minutes
but none would go their way. They played undefeated Carlisle scoreless,
and then won 4-3 on penalty kicks. In the tourney opener they played a
steady game to defeat Richmond Christian. The Eagles opened the season
at Northcross, winning 4-2 on overtime. Northcross went on to finish #2
in state. During the season TCS scored 4 goals in the second half to win
a come from behind victory over Tandem. They also defeated a strong
Fork Union team and cross town rival STAB. Coach Bryan Verbrugge made
these comments about his team. “They are a great group of guys and fun
to be around. They worked extremely hard in preseason, improved steadily
in technical and tactical aspects of the game, and exhibited a real
“will to win” that showed throughout the season. The character of these
young men is solid and that helped us immensely.” 10th grader Girma
Fekadu led the team in scoring. He was a street kid in Ethiopa and is
now in the process of being adopted. This was his first year on the team.
Jonathan Whyte, an 8th grader, spent the year in goal for TCS. They
will lose 8 players to graduation and return 14. The graduating seniors
were Jack Murray, John Berrey, Andy Hollis, Austin Diduch, David
Widder-Varhegi, Jim Widmer, Gage Jenkins, & Josh Sipe. Dan Marotta is
the assistant coach.
