The
Jefferson District golf season is off and running and at the moment the
top 2 teams are as they were at the end of the 2010 season. Western is
in first and and Monticello is nipping at their heels. In the August
16th mini match at Rivanna Golf Resort in Palmyra, Western won in a
playoff over Monticello. Both teams finished the regulation match at 314
and Western won a 2 hole playoff. CHS was 3rd at at 321, Louisa at 330,
Powhaten 351, and Fluvanna at 400. In high school golf you take your
best 4 scores and generally you play 6. At schools like Western who are
deep, their 5 & 6 are often as good as other school’s first so they
don’t experience the drop-off. Sophomore Hunter Weis of Western was the
individual champion at 76. Western is certainly the odds on favorite
this year as not only do they have senior leadership from Alex O’Dell,
Brett Engle, & Landon Weis but their underclassmen have got game as
well. Kent Miller won the Reines Jewelers Charlottesville Junior
Championship this summer. Western finished second in the state AA
tournament this past spring. Monticello golf will be challenging WAHS
all season as they have 4 strong seniors in Evan Childress, Carson
Wilmer, Jake Livengood & Kevin Archer.  Ryan Pace, a freshman, won
his age group at the Reines tournament this summer as well.
Charlottesville is lead by a junior, Rob Bergland. The rest of the top
six are freshmen and sophomores. The surprise for CHS coach Dick Engle
has been the play of freshman Philip Hoffman. He has been the low
medalist twice for CHS and at the Rivanna tournament he was 2
shots behind low medalist Hunter Weis.
