Monticello
girls basketball’s overall record was 11-9 but the important record was
the one in the Jefferson District. They are 7-2, and by defeating
Western twice they are finishing higher in the JD than any other
Monticello team before them. Powhatan may rule the roost this year but
Monticello only loses 3 seniors so they will certainly be a pre-season
favorite to win the JD in 2013. Rachel Eplee, Hannah Shephard, &
Libby Firer will graduate this year knowing that they have helped lay
the groundwork for what could be multiple years of superior performance
in the Jefferson District. In the game against Western, the Lady
Mustangs started slow but used a 19-2 run between the end of the first
half and the first 5 minutes of the 3rd to turn a 13-6 deficit into a
25-15 lead. For the Western the leading scorer was Kathleen
Crickenberger with 11 points and for Monticello freshman Molly Shephard
had 13. MHS has one more home game with Charlottesville on the 7th to
close out the season. WAHS has to travel to Powhatan to face the 16-2
Jefferson District Champions.
