The
Albemarle County based Monticello United soccer club’s 12U team took
second place at the Richmond Cup tournament over the Labor Day weekend.
Monticello United Soccer Club is dedicated to individual player
development as well as team development and team stability from year to
year. Currently teams play in the Old Dominion Soccer League (ODSL) and
the Virginia Soccer League, Inc (VSLI). MonU alum and freshman Betsy
Haugh is the starting goalie for Marshall. The coaches of the MonU
Flames are Hakan Pehlivan, Pat Reilly, & Matt Jaggard. The team
consists of Laila Arzouni, Kira Fagan, Makala Gray, Catie Grebe, Josie
Mallory, Caroline McCullen, Keelin O'Hara, Morgan Rose, Olivia Serbati,
and Jenn Wendelken. This was the first tournament for the Flames and
they had only been able to get in one scrimmage. In the first game
against FC Richmond Metro ‘99, the MonU girls won 1-0. Jenn Wendelken
shot on goal and was blocked by the goalie, but then Josie Mallory
kicked it off the goal post for the score. The second game against FC
Richmond Mystix ‘00 was a tie for most of the game with a goal from
Josie Mallory and several saves from goalies Catie Grebe and Morgan
Rose. But Mystix snuck a goal in towards the end of the game for a 2-1
loss for MonU. The girls came back in game three against Dynamo Soccer
Club with a 4-0 win which landed them 2nd place for the tournament.
Strong defense by Olivia Serbati and others kept Dynamo from scoring.
Two goals were scored by Laila Arzouni, one by Morgan Rose, and one by
Kira Fagan in the last few minutes of the game.
