This week's Valley Honda road trip may be the longest one of the fall. Let's travel down to Cary, NC., to watch the highly ranked Albemarle HS boys & girls cross country teams show how they run in the commonwealth. They are in the Great American Cross Country Festival. Cary is outside of Raleigh and is about 4 hours whether you go through Richmond or take the scenic route down to Lynchburg and then to Rustberg & South Boston. This will bring you into Durham where you hop on the interstate for the brief drive to Cary. The trip through Rustberg is absolutely beautiful and you will see some parts of the state not traveled often. There is a house on the right that has a yard full of whirligigs. There are flea markets on Saturday morning in several of the towns along the way. Once into North Carolina you start noticing a lot of dirt tracks. Where we have the Waynesboro Speedway they have 3 or 4. But we are here for a different kind of speed. The festival has college teams as well so you can believe there will be some scouting going on. It has been in existence since the early 2000's. Directions are simple: 29S,501S (into Durham), 147 S to I40 E, exit 290 to Cary. Look for a crowd of skinny people in running shoes. Cary by the way is the acronym for Collection Area for Relocated Yankees.
