Pop Warner Football
Pop Warner football has been around since the inception of the league in 1929 by founder Joseph J. Tomlin as a four-team conference in Northeast Philadelphia. Since then, participation has steadily increased to today's record numbers. Over 240,000 youths participated in Pop Warner-sanctioned football programs in 2004, and those numbers are continuing to grow.SAFETY FIRST:Kids compete with kids of similar age and size. Pop Warner is the ONLY youth football program (local, regional and national) that sets and enforces a strictAGE & WEIGHT MATRIX that reduces the risk and reality of injuries.Pop Warner exists to use football, cheerleading, dance and a respect for education to develop strong, smart, responsible, healthy young men and women. We give them experiences that build their appreciation for and understanding of leadership, teamwork, and discipline. While individual statistics may be more common, particularly among older football players, Pop Warner only recognizes the athletic accomplishments of the team, not the individual. We don't track personal tallies of touchdowns or yards rushing per game. We don't count sacks or blocked kicks. We applaud the athletic efforts of the team to reinforce the importance of teamwork, with each member. We don't try to build stars. We don't want to over-inflate a young ego, nor do we want to risk injuring the self-esteem of a young person. Whether our kids have good days or bad, they are still an integral part of our team…and always will be.Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (PWLS) is the only national youth sports organization in America that requires its participants to perform adequately in the classroom before permitting them to play. We believe that the standards we have set give these children a sense of responsibility and an appreciation for academics and athletics that will help them develop later on in life.Like such organizations as theNational Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and National Federation of High Schools (NFHS), PWLS has academic guidelines and criteria that need to be met in order for a child to participate.SCHOLASTIC FITNESS: THE NATIONAL POLICYProof of satisfactory progress in school is required. A 2.0/70% or the equivalent shall be the minimum grade point average acceptable to participate. In cases of doubt, conflict of opinion, or if a valid report card is not submitted, the nationally published scholastic eligibility form shall be used and deemed final. Each year, the most academically accomplished Pop Warner kids compete for Academic All-American status. This process begins at the association level and up through each of the eight Pop Warner regions to the national level. In 2009, over 400,000 kids participated in Pop Warner. As our numbers once again reached record levels, 280+ First Team members, over 5,000 Second Team members and 2,000+ Honorable Mention scholars were named as Academic All-Americans at the National Level for 2008-2009.The PWLS All-American Program requires a minimum 96% grade point average to apply for All-American status. After the applications have been processed, Pop Warner determines National First Team All-Americans (35 football, 35 cheer per grade), National Second Team All-Americans and National Honorable Mention Scholars. #55 in the Papa Johns ad on the home page of this Youth Sports Now .com web site from Greene County was selected to be a first team All American in 2010, Dylan Schaff played for our Central Virginia Jets. Dylan was honored at the National Pop Warner Scholastics All American Banquet in Philadelphia. A number of local families and local Pop Warner Directors attended the special event.Central Virginia Pop Warner Football Conference Inc has a charter with PWLS, Inc to serve the counties of Madison, Orange, Louisa, Greene, Albemarle, Nelson, Buckingham and Fluvanna and hopes to have teams from each of those counties participating in the Conference in the near future. The Central Virginia Pop Warner Football Conference Inc participates in the Mid South Region; one of 8 Pop Warner regions that compete for a National Championship each year. The Mid- South is made up of teams from Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina Kentucky, Tennessee and Northern Alabama.Founded in 2005 by a local youth sports coach Gene A. Ware Central Virginia Pop Warner Football Conference has had as many as 12 teams in the Conference and has brought home two Regional Championship. "Our program wants the people of Central Virginia to know our local and Regional success is due to the fact that God has blessed us with extremely talented youth coaches, volunteers and sponsors. Central Virginia has been blessed with a number of quality volunteer coaches; people that know how to teach and lead our young student athletes and playing under a written set of rules all Pop Warner participants must adhere to" . Said current President and Founder of Central Virginia Pop Warner.Currently Central Virginia Pop Warner offers two divisions of play locally (JPW) locally named the Joe Bingler Division for ages 8,9,10 and older but lighter 11 year olds and (JM) locally known as our Carl Dean division for ages 10,11,12 and older but lighter 13 year olds. Other age groups and weight classes are available but these reach mot beginning player ages 8-13. Moms like the strict age & weight parameters. Grouping kids the same age and weight has some advantages in this instructional stage of football. We strongly support the local Thomas Jefferson Youth Football program in Central Virginia as an Independent youth football program they can take all players and for those that do not meet the Pop Warner guideline ages and weights it is great for them to have an optional league to play in.All of our Registration is done on line atwww.cvpopwarner.com but if you would like to discuss Pop Warner options and new teams Contact Gene A.
