Jefferson Junior Tennis

Provides friendly competition for juniors enrolled in Albemarle County, Charlottesville City and private club lesson/clinic programs throughout the area. Participating teams include ACAC, Albemarle County Parks/Rec., Boar’s Head, Charlottesville City Parks/Rec., Fairview, Farmington, Forest Lakes, Glenmore, Key West, and UVA Intramural (teams vary by season).

A League Championship tournament for all participants is also held during the summer at the UVA Snyder Tennis Center courts, and a fall tournament is held (2008: Glenmore). Nearly 500 kids participate in the League, which has been operating for over 30 years.

Plans are being made for the summer program to include a "select" division for more older and experienced players, with a more competitive aspect, and a "novice" division for younger or less advanced players.

Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall.

Ages/experience levels: 8-18, all levels – kids are typically matched up by the team pros to ensure that players have comparable experience (see also plans noted above).

Location and time: Held at courts of participating teams – see above. Spring: Sunday afternoons 4-6 PM. Summer: Thursday afternoons 1-4 PM. Fall: Friday afternoons 6-8 PM. Schedule is established at beginning of each season.

Cost: League matches included in cost of lesson/clinic programs; no charge for summer or fall tournaments.

Prizes and awards: Individual teams typically provide T-shirts for their players. All players in summer League Championships tournament get T-shirts; winners and finalists in each group receive trophies, and winning team is listed on engraved plaque.

The Roger Flint Spirit Award is given annually to a player from each team who best represents the ideals of the league – competition, hard work and sportsmanship, in honor of the late Roger Flint who was instrumental in promoting tennis in Charlottesville in the 1970s and ‘80s. See Awards page of website.

Sponsors: Glenmore Country Club generously donates the court time for the fall tournament, and the Charlotteville Area Tennis Association funds other costs associated with the League and the summer tournament, inlcuding paying for use of courts at UVa.

Contact: Details available from the pros at clubs listed above, including forms for summer tournament sign up. Susie Fidler of the UVA Intramural Department develops the summer match schedule and organizes the League Championship tournament (924-3791; slf8z@Virginia.edu)
