As a member of the Jefferson District of the Virginia High School League, Western Albemarle High School offers students the opportunity to participate on 48 athletic teams in 24 varsity sports. During the 2004-05 school year, 893 WAHS student participants competed in school sponsored VHSL athletics. Western had the highest participation rate amongst Group AA schools. In the 2004-05 academic year, Warrior athletes earned 21 district, regional, and state tournament championships. The school also won its second consecutive VHSL Group AA Wachovia Cup signifying the best all-around athletic program in the state in Group AA. While succeeding on the field is a goal at Western, the athletic program also recognizes the importance of teaching student athletes the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, commitment, dedication and the fun of athletic participation.
